Horlick Historic District

Racine, WI

Comprising nearly 16 acres in the City of Racine, the Horlick complex of buildings was once home to one of the City’s largest employers, the Horlick Malted Milk Company. JSD provided civil and landscape design services for the redevelopment of Racine’s Horlick Historic District. The first phase of redevelopment restored buildings built in the late 1800s by the Horlick Malted Milk Company, resulting in a mixture of market rate and affordable housing units. As other phases are built, future uses could include commercial, retail, light industrial, business incubator, educational and recreational uses.

This $100 million multi-phase redevelopment project integrates the past with the future. The successful preservation of the campus’ historic buildings prevails alongside modern infrastructure improvements, including water, sanitary sewer, roadways, parking and enhanced pedestrian amenities. The result is a modern, mixed-use, urban neighborhood built upon the roots of Racine’s past.

JSD’s scope of services included conceptual site planning, master planning, civil engineering, roadway design, stormwater management, and landscape design. JSD played a key role in navigating site permitting and the land use entitlement process with the City of Racine and will continue to play a key role in construction administration through completion of this exciting and monumental project for the City.
