Heritage Park

Homer Glen, IL

JSD’s Lori Vierow and Sarah Dreier, while employed with a previous firm, collaborated with Tria Architecture, Inc. for the design of Heritage Park, which is approximately 103 acres and a destination park for the Village of Homer Glen. The park site was developed in multiple phases as phase one was the Active Core consisting of eight acres. Active recreation components include pickleball courts, tennis courts, sand volleyball, bean bag toss, a bocce court, horseshoe courts, a challenge course, fitness area, sculptural climber, turf berm play area, and a large nature play area for children 2-12 years of age. Interestingly, our team had selected all the timber used for the natural play area. The Active Core site is the central hub of activity and recreation for the site. Additional passive recreation features include a sensory garden with raised planters for all users, a pavilion with seating areas, music play, prairie seek-n-find with interpretive signage, hammocks, and restrooms. Both the active and passive elements of this area are connected by a central Tree of Life Plaza with pathways radiating out from it. The site plan includes saving many existing trees while offering new landscaping, pathway lighting, drinking fountains, seating and gateway entry features. JSD Professional Services was hired to perform the design for the next phases of the park including the Village Green, sled hill and amphitheater.
