Exciting Progress with MMSD’s $500M Referendum: JSD Leads Site Design for Two New Schools!

JSD is proud to be at the forefront of transformative work for the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) as part of its $500 million referendum, influencing 10 of the district’s schools. Our team is deep into schematic design for four school sites and recently presented key project updates to Madison’s Urban Design Commission.

MMSD is proposing two brand-new, state-of-the-art combination schools:

  • Sherman Middle School – Shabazz High School will replace the current facility at 1601 N. Sherman Ave. The new building will be constructed on the unused portion of the site while the existing school remains operational. Once complete, the old building will be removed to make way for new parking and green space. The new facility will serve grades 6–8 (middle school) and 9–12 (high school).
  • Black Hawk Middle School – Gompers Elementary School will be reimagined as a combined school at 1402 Wyoming Way. Following a similar phased construction approach, the new facility will serve students in 4K–5th grade (elementary) and 6th–8th grade (middle school).

Our team recently delivered conceptual site designs for both locations to the Urban Design Commission and will continue leading the site planning and development as these exciting projects move forward. And this is just the beginning—five more MMSD schools are on the horizon!

For over 20 years, JSD has proudly partnered with MMSD to plan, design, and build a wide range of site improvements—from athletic facilities and pavement restoration to ensuring safe, student-friendly playgrounds and parking areas. We’re thrilled to continue shaping the future of education in Madison.

Stay tuned—more innovation is coming!
